We’ve been quite quiet on the blog recently as we’ve both been super busy with work but we felt it was necessary to post an update as there is an issue we both feel needs addressing.
It was expected that we would receive negative comments once the blog went live and it has been incredibly difficult to find a way to take this all on the chin. Funnily enough, all the negativity has come from the same source: current, previous and future Ukutula volunteers.
The reason we wanted to post about this was not to cause drama or to amplify this, but to give our say on the matter. We’ve been accused of being sadistic attention seeking liars who have written everything we have purely ‘for fun’. We literally can’t imagine why people would think we’d spend an entire year saving £1.5k to go on ‘a trip of a lifetime’ all just to come home and complain about it.
The fact these people have been so defensive and malicious from the get go surely emphasises how little they actually care about the welfare of the lions. All in all the only thing that matters is trying to make a difference to these wonderful animals.
Of course with negativity comes a bundle of praise and we’ve been contacted by a handful of people who had planned travelling trips abroad and considered volunteering on the way. Since reading our blog they’ve said how eye opening everything has been and have been so grateful for being made aware of this horrific industry. Some have changed or cancelled volunteering plans and so many people have mentioned how they just want to spread the news and let everyone know about this dreadful practise.
We’d just like to thank everyone who has supported us and the blog, but most importantly the lions. THEY are the reason we’re doing this and THEY are the only thing that matters here.
